All Day & A Night Neflix Movie Review: A Wasted Opportunity

All Day & A Night Neflix Movie Review: A Wasted Opportunity

Rating: **(2 stars)

The  problem with films about  the black community in America is that their problems are so  similar as to make cinema  on  the race seem  like  a community affair. Every  film is about the Black Identity and the search for self-worth  in a  hostile racist environment.

In  All Day & A Night  a young black man Jahkor, played by Ashton Sanders who shot to fame  with Moonlight,  is the ghetto boy whose father works hard with a  stick  on  his son’s back to ensure the boy doesn’t  end up trapped in  the  stagnant  ruinous environment. And when Dad asks if he has  been too harsh, son I supposed reply in the negative.

Jahkor has his own plans on how to lead his life. Before we know it  his life  propels  out of control and  he ends  up in jail for manslaughter after   killing fellow-blacks in what seems  like  senseless  shoot-out.
Motivations  are  hard  to  decode  in this  film that takes our  presence and participation  for granted.  This is an insider’s view of what it feels like to be ghettoized in one’s  home-territory.The rhythm is  purposely  uneven. Jahkor’s present  and  past are defined by  a uniform code of brutality.

Amidst  this  chaos of internalized  violence we are expected to empathize with  Jahkor’s  predicament.  But we don’t know  him well enough to care about him. And he doesn’t seem to care whether we care  or not.Ashton Sander’s performance is characterized  by  a defiant arrogance. He dares us to  ignore him   and at the same time challenges  us to try and penetrate  his  criminal  environment.

By the time Jahkor’s life  comes completely  undone we stop  caring about his future, because he doesn’t seem  to have one. There  is a plot-defining irony here  that  is supposed to move us. Jahkor and father James(Jeffrey Wright) are incarcerated in the same prison and the  brutal  dad  makes every effort to save  his son’s skin from the hostility in the prison.

All Day & A Night makes it difficult for us to  keep track of  the  supporting characters. They are  largely  blurred  emblems  of  corrosive  criminality. The redemptive spirit is so lost in din of the plot that I was  caught frequently wondering  at the purposelessness of the exercise. What  a wasted opportunity to portray wasted  lives!

What is the controversy over homecoming of stranded migrants: politics or economics?

0
What is the controversy over homecoming of stranded migrants: politics or economics?

The government is charging train fare from the migrants, who are stranded in their state of work and returning home by special trains — Shramik Special — run by the Indian Railways. This has created a row among opposition parties and activists.

According to the standard operating protocol, issued by the Indian Railways, the state, where trains originate, has to identify the migrants who are stranded. The state government has to issue train ticket and collect fare, which it will hand over to the railways.

Now, here is the problem and origin of controversy.

Most of the stranded migrants are low-wage earners. A volunteer group, Stranded Workers Action Network (SWAN) has said it interviewed stranded workers across states and 64 per cent of them had less than Rs 100 with them. This was their monetary status as on April 26. This means that most of the migrant workers would not be in a position to pay for their travel fare. Tourists, students and pilgrims can be assumed to be better off.

The railways also said if the journey is over 12-hour long, the passengers will be provided one meal. The originating state has also to provide food. That is, they have to bear the cost of food for people (one may read voters) from other states. Some state governments have objected to the railways direction that they have to pay for food.

Contrast this situation, as many politicians such as Omar Abdullah and activists have alleged, with those stranded abroad due to coronavirus crisis. Beginning from air-lifting Indians from China in January 31, the government evacuated hundreds of Indians stranded in other countries till March 22. Special flights were operated and those flown in were quarantined at ITBP facilities.

The evacuees were not charged for their travel. As per protocol, the Air India sent the bill to the external affairs ministry. In response to a question about two special flights from Wuhan on January 31 and February 1, Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan told the Lok Sabha, “Air India has raised a bill of Rs 5,98,90,352 [almost Rs 6 crore] for operating two special flights to China.”

Later, special flights were operated to bring Indians stranded in other countries. The Air India sent bills to the external affairs ministry. Simply put, the central government paid for the air travel of Indians stranded abroad.

However, in the case of travel of migrants – most of them are labourers – they have been asked to pay for their journey. It is the basic fare charged by the railways. For example, Kerala government which sent special train to Jharkhand last week charged Rs 875 per passenger.

Making low-wage earning internal migrants to pay for their travel by railways enraged many for an additional reason. In March, Railways Minister Piyush Goyal announced that Indian Railways would donate Rs 151 crore to the PM Cares Fund, a purse that has already generated controversy since its creation in the wake of coronavirus outbreak.

There is, however, a different maths related to air-traveling migrants and their train-faring cousins: of numbers, both in humans and money.

According to a 2019 UN report, India is the largest source of international migration. It said around 1.8 crore Indians live abroad. The external affairs ministry puts the number at 3.21 crore including 1.86 crore people of Indian origin. There are 1.34 crore non-resident Indians living abroad, MEA says.

Not all of them wanted to come back to India when novel coronavirus outbreak spread across the globe. And, despite the growing number of people registering with authorities for a home-bound flight, their number is not small compared to the size of population. For example, there are about 34.20 lakh Indians in UAE. Of them, 1.5 lakh have registered for a home-bound flight.

The picture is completely different within India. The country has a huge problem of internal migration or inter-state and inter-district migration. The number of internal migrants is estimated to be around 10 crore. Most of them are the builders of rising India. They build cities, their multiplexes, highways, metro rail networks, deliver food, pull rickshaw and drive empowered Indians home after work.

India is the top recipient of international remittances – money sent home by migrants. In 2018, India got about $80 billion. India’s domestic remittances – money sent from urban to rural — are estimated at $26 billion.

The controversy has, however, benefitted the internal migrants. Congress president Sonia Gandhi announced that her party will foot the bill for travel fare of the migrants. Next came the announcement that the railways would subsidise travel fare by 95 per cent.

Meet Chris Hemsworth’s Young Indian Co-star in Extraction

Meet Chris Hemsworth's Young Indian Co-star in Extraction

The surprise  packet of  Avengers’ superstar Chris Hemsworth’s new Netflix blockbuster Extraction is 16-year-old Rudhraksh Jaiswal who  shares almost every frame with the Australian superstar. When I  spoke to Rudhraksh he seemed dazed and dazzled by the experience. “It’s all so unreal…I never  thought I’d be an actor. I was a state-level  swimmer and also a  mixed martial-arts  student. I was also good  at my studies. Then one day I got a call from  the casting  director for an audition for an ad. I was reluctant as I had a swimming competition coming up. But my Mom persuaded me to give it a try. So I did one audition, then another…That’s how I got interested in acting.”

Extraction has changed  everything for Rudhraksh. “I  did a role in the serial Mahabharat  before this film. But yes, Extraction was a big Hollywood film. And it was a different experience altogether.”

Very few Indian actors get this kind of  pivotal role, and that too in a big-budgeted action spectacle. The 16-year-old who played  Sahadeva in a 2013  series Mahabharat admits  he was taken aback  when he  bagged the  role of Ovi Mahajan, the kidnapped boy who is rescued by Hemsworth  from Dhaka’s mafia. “It came  as a surprise. When I got the  role I had no idea Chris was going to be  my  co-star. The casting director Tess Joseph, who has been instrumental  in my getting this role, called  me and  I went  through several auditions before I  got the role. Then  Ms Tess Joseph told me Sam Hargrave was the director and  I was  like, wow. I knew he did all the stunts for the Avengers  film. I am  a big fan of the MCU(Marvel Comics Universe). So  was I surprised to get the role? Yes, and very very grateful for  having bagged such a  pivotal  role in  such a big film.”

Rudhraksh  had  to  perform some  really dangerous  stunts. “But it wasn’t as hard as it looks because I have done  a lot of gymnastics  and  I  love  sports. Also, Sam Sir (director  Sam Hargrave) and Chris Sir (Hemsworth)  were very supportive. Sam  Sir has a distinguished stunt background and  he was directing for the first time.  It felt  like  a huge honour being  part  of Sam Sir’s directorial debut. And  then he told me I’d be working with Chris Hemsworth. Until then I was just auditioning for 6-7 rounds. I  had no idea whom I was going to work with. To be working with Chris Hemsworth and Sam Hargraves. Oh my God! I felt  it was all a dream.”

Chris  was  very helpful. “Before we started shooting in Ahmedabad, we had several script readings  during which Chris Sir helped me understand my role. He  helped me to  understand   many of  the intricacies of  the script. He  gave me  a lot of acting tips.He taught me voice modulation. Chris Sir also  helped me with my action scenes. He is super-fit and  super-handsome. He’s always been very inspiring for me . And the way  he rolled and jumped …I am really thank ful, to Chris Sir. To watch  him and his body-double Bobby Holland  doing all those stunts  was  a very  inspiring experience.”

At  the  end  of  Extraction there  is a distraction where we get the feeling there’s going  to be  a sequel.Rudhraksh says he has  no idea  of this. “If it happens it will be good. I’d love to work with the crew again. But one of my friends pointed  out the  very interesting water  connection between  Chris Sir’s character  and me. When he is introduced the film he’s  meditating at the  bottom  of  a river. When the film ends  I am at the  bottom of a swimmingpool.”

Is it true Rudhraksh  will be  in  the  next Avengers film?  “When last year Joe Russo Sir  came to  Mumbai to promote Avengers I mailed him to ask if I could meet  him. He  invited me  over to the Taj.We  spoke of the MCU.We  shot some  funny videos .And he  told me I could  be part  of his  next film and it maybe  an Avengers film.So if that happens , nothing like it.”

Sadly  , because  of  the  lockdown  Rudhraksh is missing it on all the public attention that Extraction would have probably got him. “Yes  I  could have  done  a lot more publicity for the film. But this is a  time when all of us need  to stay indoors. I could’ve gone to  my school. My school friends keep face-timing me, asking for Chris Sir’s autograph. I  love making them  jealous.”

Rudhraksh is in touch with Chris Hemsworth who is in Australia. “I have been in touch with him. I keep asking him for acting tips and if there  is a good acting school abroad I can attend. We wish each other for all religious festivals.”

Next from Rudhraksh is a film titled The Tenant where he again plays a pivotal role. “It’s been to a couple of film festivals. I will be released  in August. My Mom is also  taking to  some major production  houses.  I want to  pursue  my  acting career while I  finish my studies and then  I’ll be  fully into acting.  But  right now I’m at home like  everyone else doing household chores, cooking, cleaning. At the moment I am just another boy helping his mom during the lockdown.”

RIP Rishi Kapoor: Actor’s Ashes Immersed by Ranbir Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor in Mumbai

RIP Rishi Kapoor: Actor's Ashes Immersed by Ranbir Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor in Mumbai

The Kapoor family have said their final goodbye to Rishi Kapoor. The veteran actor had passed away last Thursday (April 30) in Mumbai after losing the battle to cancer. He had been admitted to the hospital a couple of weeks earlier after his health worsened. Unfortunately, the COVID19 lockdown did have its impact on the final journey of Rishi.

At the funeral, only 19 persons were allowed by the government. The actor’s last rites took place in Chandanwadi in South Mumbai with only a few close family members and friends present. The group included Rishi’s wife Neetu, son Ranbir Kapoor, Ranbir’s girlfriend Alia Bhatt, close friends Abhishek Bachchan, Ayan Mukherjee and Anil Ambani among a few others. Daughter Riddhima could not make it from Delhi because of the lockdown and she finally had to drive down to Mumbai, arriving in the city late on Saturday evening. The family then did a prayer meet at their Bandra home.

Now, the Kapoors have immersed the ashes of Rishi Kapoor at Banganga in Mumbai. Generally, most Hindu families prefer to immerse the ashes in holy places like Hardwar, but they didn’t get permission to travel to another state. Randhir Kapoor, Rishi’s elder brother, told a news agency, “We did a prayer meet yesterday (Sunday, May 3). Today we immersed his ashes in Banganga as we haven’t received permission from the authorities to go to Hardwar.”

In some videos shared online, Ranbir Kapoor can be seen with his mother Neetu and sister Riddhima, performing this ritual. Present alongside him are Alia Bhatt who has been a huge support for the actor in these difficult times. Close friend Ayan Mukherjee, who directed Ranbir in films like Wake up Sid and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani is also seen by his side.

Handwara: Security forces recover Chinese Type 56 rifle from encounter site

0
Kamaljit Kaur Sandhu

Security agencies killed two terrorists, including a Lashkar commander, during an encounter in Handwara town in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district late Saturday.

Along with the bodies of two terrorists during clearance operations, security forces also recovered weapons and other “warlike stores” from the encounter site. Chinese Type 56 and Romanian WASR series rifles were found at the encounter site.

A colonel, a major and three other security forces personnel were killed in encounter with terrorists in north Kashmir on Sunday. The encounter in Handwara claimed the lives of Colonel Ashutosh Sharma, Major Anuj Sood, Naik Rajesh and Lance Naik Dinesh, all from the Brigade of the Guards regiment, and at present part of the 21 Rashtriya Rifles.

A Jammu and Kashmir Police Sub-Inspector, Sageer Ahmad Pathan was also killed.

Giving details of the encounter, officials said that the two terrorists killed in the encounter included commander of banned Lashker-e-Taiba Haider, who has been active in the north Kashmir area.

They had held some civilians hostage, the officials said, adding that a couple of terrorists could have managed to give security forces the slip under the cover of darkness as well. A hunt has been launched in the entire area.

Director General of Jammu and Kashmir Police Dilbagh Singh said, “Sad to inform that five brave personnel including Colonel Ashutosh Sharma, Major Anuj Sood and sub-inspector of JKP Shakeel Qazi were martyred in the line of duty.”

THE OPERATION

Security forces had noticed presence of some terrorists in the Rajwar forests in the Handwara area and a brief exchange of fire had taken place on Thursday.

Around Saturday afternoon, intelligence inputs indicated presence of the same group of terrorists inside a house at Changimulla village, prompting Col Sharma to launch a cordon-and-search operation.

After a considerable lull, Col Sharma and four other personnel barged into a house from an adjacent cowshed presuming that the terrorists had been eliminated in the heavy gunfire.

According to the officials, the team came under heavy fire after rescuing civilians and all communication links with Col Sharma and his team were snapped. Calls made on the mobile numbers of the team were answered by terrorists.

The Army then rushed in para-troopers, who after ascertaining that the Army officer and his team were killed in the encounter, launched an offensive early morning and killed the two terrorists.

On conclusion of the operations, the house was searched and bodies of two terrorists eliminated in the encounter were recovered along with arms and ammunition.

Raaz e Ulfat and Why I Think It’s a Must Watch

0
Raaz e Ulfat and Why I Think It's a Must Watch

As the month of Ramadan has just arrived the drama serial Raaz e Ulfat is a complete dose of fun and excitement. The drama is written by Maha Malik and directed by Siraj Ul Haq with amazing faces and colorful personalities like Yumna Zaidi, Shehzad Sheikh, Komal Aziz, Kiran Haq, Gohar Rasheed, Nida Mumtaz, Jinnan Hussain, Seemi Pasha and Hina Bayat Khan.

As the story begins, the DDLJ fans could relate the characters. Mushq, played by Yumna Zaidi, is very much like Simran of DDLJ who was obedient, naïve but has many dreams, Amber, played by Arisha Razi, looks similar to Chutki who was young, comical and a bit mischievous, Iftikhar, played by as Simran’s father who is strict and conservative and Hina Bayat Khan as Simran’s mother who is a loving mother and always correcting her daughters.

The story’s plot caught viewers’ attention as there have been ages since any drama like Raaz E Ulfat has come on air. The story revolves around Mushq and her struggles to break through the boundaries and see the world beyond but she is like a bufferfly who is confined in a cage under the supervision of her father, Iftikhar.

Mushq expresses her desire to study further in a university for her masters which after repeated requests, her father finally accepts. She is an innocent and naïve girl with a baggage of small dreams with her yet she doesn’t know the evils of the society as she has always been clutched by her father. The story takes a slight turn when Mushq enters the university and bumps into Sehba, played by Komal Aziz.

Sehba is beautiful, liberal; outgoing girl and belongs to an elite class. Mushq is very much fascinated with Sehba and became friends with her. As per Sehba’s nature, she has boys as friends, drives alone and sometimes appears at Mushq’s house from nowhere and obviously Mushq’s father doesn’t like it all.

Mushq is not realizing that gradually she is slipping out of her family principals and morals. She encountered Irtiza, played by Shehzad Sheikh, when Sehba bumped her car into his car. Irtiza falls for Mushq because of her innocence, after failed attempt to talk to Mushq outside her university, he asks Sehba, who also happened to be his family friend, to fix his and Mushq’s meeting.

On the other hand, Mushq keeps thinking about Irtiza, however, at the same time questions herself for doing so. Ismail, played by Gohar Rasheed, is a helpless husband whose wife, played by Kiran Haq, has diagnosed with Cancer. Ismail also has a sister Mohini, played by Jinnan Hussain, who is a mentally challenged young girl. Hussain’s performance as Mohini is applaud-worthy. Mohini is a completely different as well as challenging character for Hussain as compared to her past characters in plays.

As the drama is progressing and the next episode’s teaser is out, it shows that Sehba and Mushq’s friendship is getting stronger. Mushq’s fascination with Sehba is taking Mushq closer to Sehba which is becoming alarming for Mushq’s family. Amber reminds Mushq of her moral values and that she doesn’t take advantage of the freedom her family has granted her. One can make out that Sehba and Mushq’s friendship is surely going to cause major damages to Mushq and her life that could either lead Mushq towards surrender in front of her miseries and father’s decisions or stand for herself.

The story has a strong plot and the direction is up to the mark. The Pyaar Kay Sadkay actress again proved her versatility in the character of Mushq; her innocent expressions, shyness and dreamy eyes winning viewers hearts.  She might not be shown as studios as Sehba is but Yumna’s strong grip over the character is making her an utmost reason to watch the drama.
All actors are leaving their marks as the story is moving ahead. Gohar Rasheed seems to play an important role in the up-coming episodes. Jinnan Hussain’s performance is intriguing and Komal Aziz is playing the role of a perfect wicked girl. Every actor has done justice to the roles. We hope that Raaz-e-Ulfat unfolds new and interesting chapters in the coming episodes, holds the ground and keep entertaining viewers..

Kobe Bryant gave his documentary interview before he died in a Jan. 26 helicopter crash, meaning his portion of episode five was able to be left intact from how it was edited before his death outside of an intro tribute.

Then came the scene from the 1998 All-Star Game inside the East locker room, with Jordan and the other All Stars talking about Bryant as a young up-and-comer.

In Bryant’s interview, he said that he saw Jordan as his “older brother,” and Jordan said he also thought of Bryant as a “little brother.”

Adidas fumbles Jordan shoe deal

During the documentary, Jordan revealed he actually wanted to sign with Adidas coming out of college, but the company never even offered him a deal as they said they couldn’t make him his own shoe line.

Not only did Jordan prefer Adidas, but he didn’t even want to meet with the executives at Nike. But lucky for him, his mother talked him into it.

Isiah Thomas getting snubbed from 1992 Olympics

The 1992 Dream Team is one of the most iconic teams in sports history, but there was a lot of controversy about Isiah Thomas being left off. Much of the blame for Thomas’ snub is his beef with Jordan after he and the Pistons refused to shake hands with the Bulls following their defeat in the 1991 Eastern Conference Finals. Twitter made sure to get off plenty of jokes on the situation.

Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen’s beef with Tony Kukoc

Another conflict during the 1992 Olympics was the tension between Bulls teammates Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen with the U.S. and Tony Kukoc with Croatia. Kukoc was being groomed by GM Jerry Krause to be the future of the Bulls, which Jordan and Pippen didn’t appreciate because they felt they were being disrespected.

That put a target on Kukoc’s back when the U.S. and Croatia faced each other.

Charles Barkley was good at basketball

Remember a while back when Draymond Green said he’s had more impact as a player than Charles Barkley? Yeah, that was dumb, and “The Last Dance” reminded everyone just how dumb it was with Barkley’s performance during the 1993 season in which he won MVP over Jordan and took the Suns to the NBA Finals.

Michael Jordan’s sunglasses

During the 1993 Eastern Conference Finals against the New York Knicks, reports surfaced that Jordan had gambling problems. He didn’t talk to the media for a week before he finally granted an interview to Ahmahd Rashad, saying he didn’t have a gambling problem while wearing the shadiest sunglasses you’ve ever seen in your life.

Michael Jordan’s security guard banter

Jordan’s betting habit extended to games of quarters in the United Center hallways with security guards before games.

One guard won money off Jordan and celebrated with an MJ shrug.

Jerry Seinfeld casually chilling in the Bulls’ locker room

During the 1998 NBA season, the Bulls were drawing incredibly large crowds, with everyone scrambling to see Jordan in what was rumored to be his last season in Chicago. All of the biggest celebrities would show up to watch, and during the 90s, there was no one bigger than Jerry Seinfeld. His cameo in the Bulls’ locker room before a game gave lots of viewers a good laugh.
